Dueling piano coaching
Learn to run the room
1-on-1 coaching from James Michael Day for pianists and singers who want to become working dueling piano players. Requests, mashups, crowd work and the business side, taught by someone who plays these shows for a living.
Your coach
James Michael Day (JMD)
James is a singing pianist, DJ and MC based in Northern California. He was the organist for the San Jose Sharks, co-founded Modern Dueling Pianos and runs JMD Entertainment, booking performers for weddings, corporate parties, fundraisers and venues.
On a typical night he goes from jazz and classical to country, rock and hip hop without missing a beat, and that’s exactly what he teaches: how to play whatever the room throws at you and make it a show.

What you’ll learn
Everything the gig asks of you
Every lesson is built around your level and goals. These are the skills we work on.
Taking requests & reading the room
Managing the request pile, pacing a set, and knowing when to slow it down or blow the roof off.
Playing by ear & mashups
Faking songs you half know, quick chord charts, and stitching two hits into one crowd moment.
All styles
Rock, pop, country, jazz, classical, Motown, hip hop and the songs every wedding expects.
Crowd work & MC skills
Talking on the mic, birthday and bride call-outs, sing-alongs, and keeping the energy moving.
Duo chemistry & handoffs
Trading songs, harmonies, playful “battles” and clean transitions with your partner at the other piano.
Gear
Grand piano shells, keyboards, sound and lighting: what to buy, what to skip, and how to set up fast.
Tips & request money
How tipped requests work, how to ask without being pushy, and keeping it fun for the crowd.
Building a gig calendar
Getting booked: venues, private events, agencies, promo clips and turning one gig into the next.
The honest part
A real skill that pays
Dueling piano players can earn well per show, and request tips on top can add up on a good night. Weddings, corporate parties, fundraisers and venue nights all hire dueling pianos, and good players who can take any request stay busy.
What you make depends on your market, how often you work, the kind of events you play and how strong you are on requests and crowd work. In lessons we talk real-world numbers, with no hype and no guarantees.

Coaching questions
Do I need dueling piano experience to start coaching?
No. You need a solid foundation on piano or voice and a real interest in playing for a crowd. The coaching covers everything specific to dueling pianos: requests, playing by ear, mashups, crowd work, handoffs and the business side.
I’m a singer more than a pianist. Is this for me?
Yes. Most dueling shows have both players at the keys, so we’ll build your keyboard skills toward that, while also working on the things strong singers are great at: harmonies, leading a sing-along, MC work and owning the room.
How much can dueling piano players earn?
Dueling piano players can earn well per show, and request tips on top can add up on a good night. What you make depends on your market, how often you work, the kind of events you play and how strong you are on requests and crowd work. We talk through real-world numbers in lessons, with no hype and no guarantees.
Are lessons in person or online?
Both. 1-on-1 lessons are available in person in Northern California or online from anywhere. Group workshops may be offered for players who want to practice handoffs and duo chemistry with a partner.
Does coaching lead to gigs?
It can. When you’re ready, coaching students can audition for the JMD Entertainment talent roster, which books dueling piano and solo shows for private events, weddings, corporate parties and venues across Northern California. Roster spots are based on readiness and fit, so coaching does not guarantee work.
How much does dueling piano coaching cost?
Rates depend on the format and how often you meet. Send an inquiry and we’ll share current rates and availability.
Do I need my own gear?
Not to start. For online lessons, a keyboard or piano and a phone or laptop camera is enough. When you’re ready to work, we’ll cover what gear is worth buying and what you can skip.
