Gold Country Event Entertainment: Dueling Pianos, Solo Piano and Live Bands in Calaveras & Tuolumne

Two dueling pianos with PA speakers and a lighting tree set up for an outdoor daytime event

Gold Country events have their own rhythm. A wedding at a Murphys winery, a lakeside party at Lake Tulloch, a reunion in downtown Sonora or a ski-season night up the hill in Arnold or Bear Valley all come with long drives, outdoor stages, mountain weather and guests who came to have a good time. Most entertainment agencies treat the Sierra foothills as an add-on to Sacramento or the Bay Area. JMD Entertainment is based in Copperopolis, so Calaveras and Tuolumne counties are home, not a travel fee.

We already know the foothills

  • New Melones Lake. Modern Dueling Pianos, the dueling show JMD books, has played New Melones Marina twice.
  • Bear Valley Resort. JMD founder James Michael Day, the former San Jose Sharks organist, has played the Sun Deck at Bear Valley Resort, so we know what a mountain resort stage asks of the gear and the performer.

Picking the right act for a foothills event

  • Winery weddings and tasting room events: solo piano. Murphys, Vallecito and the rest of the Calaveras wine trail are full of patios and barrel rooms where a full band would be too much. A singing pianist with a compact sound system covers the ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner, takes requests, and keeps the volume where the winery wants it.
  • Receptions, reunions and big birthdays: dueling pianos. Two pianist-singers, an all-request show and constant crowd interaction. It works as well for grandparents as it does for the college friends, which matters at a foothills wedding where three generations share one dance floor.
  • Lake parties, community events and festivals: a live band or dueling pianos outdoors. JMD represents Whiskey Kiss and The Penetrators Groove Band for crowds that want country, classic rock, R&B and dance music. Dueling pianos also play outdoors with our own sound and lighting, like the rig in the photo above.

Planning tips for Calaveras and Tuolumne venues

  • Ask about power early. Ranch venues, lakeside lawns and vineyard sites don't always have outlets near the stage. Tell us what's on site and we'll plan for it.
  • Plan for shade and weather. Summer afternoons in the foothills get hot, and pianos and sound gear need shade. Up the hill, evenings cool off fast, and mountain weather can shift in an hour. A covered stage or a backup indoor spot keeps the show going.
  • Check the end time. Many wineries and resort venues have firm sound curfews. We build the set list around them so the night peaks before the music has to stop.
  • Allow for the drive. Highway 4 and Highway 108 are slow roads. Load-in windows should account for mountain driving and, in winter, chain controls.

Where we play in Gold Country

JMD Entertainment books events throughout Calaveras and Tuolumne counties, including Copperopolis and Lake Tulloch, Angels Camp, Murphys, Arnold, Bear Valley, Sonora, Jamestown and Twain Harte, plus nearby Oakdale and the Lodi wine region. For the wider valley, see our guide to New Year's Eve dueling pianos in the Central Valley. If your wedding is in another wine region, our guide to wine country wedding entertainment in Napa and Sonoma covers similar winery planning.

How to book

  1. Tell us the basics. The date, the venue or town, the guest count and what kind of event it is. A budget range helps us recommend the right act.
  2. We recommend a lineup. Solo piano, dueling pianos, a band or a mix, with notes on power, shade and timing for your venue.
  3. We handle the details. Contracts, production and day-of coordination stay with us.
